MATLAB Programs
A complete set of MATLAB programs accompanying each chapter. These programs implement the key calculations from Turkdogan's textbook, from Ellingham diagrams and equilibrium constants to BOF charge balances, decarburisation kinetics, and the Scheil equation. Click any program to view the source code, then download the .m file to run in MATLAB.
⌨️ How to Use
- Download the .m file for the chapter you are studying
- Open MATLAB and navigate to the download folder
- Run the script by typing the filename (without .m) in the MATLAB command window
- Each program generates figures and prints calculated values to the console
- Modify parameters to explore different steelmaking conditions
About This Resource
This interactive educational resource is based on Fundamentals of Steelmaking by E.T. Turkdogan, first published by The Institute of Materials in 1996. The textbook is intended for university graduate students, research scientists, and engineers specialising in ferrous pyrometallurgy, and serves as a reference for technical training courses for steel plant engineers and operators.
The first half of the book presents the principles of thermochemistry, rate phenomena, and critically reviewed numerical data on the physicochemical properties of gases, iron alloys, and slags. The second half is devoted to the compilation of reassessed equilibrium data on gas-slag-metal reactions, the discussion of oxygen steelmaking processes, the primary aspects of steel refining in the ladle, and reactions occurring during solidification of steel in continuous casting.
Turkdogan's approach emphasises that the equilibrium states of slag-metal reactions pertinent to steelmaking conditions can be quantified in much simpler forms in terms of the mass concentrations of elements dissolved in the steel and of oxides in the slag, rather than through complex ionic structural models. This pragmatic approach makes the subject more accessible while maintaining scientific rigour.
